Private Reader’s Study

Private Reader's Study is the individual version of the Reader's Study seminar—same books and central question, same notebook practice and capstone—delivered in a private setting where every conversation begins with the student's own reading experience. The purpose remains the same: to read carefully enough that a book has the opportunity to change how a student sees the world, and to examine that change honestly.

For the right student, the private setting changes everything. A student who reads carefully but does not yet trust their own interpretation in a group setting can say what they actually think in a private session without the social pressure of being heard first. A student with an independent interpretation can develop it at full depth rather than moderating it for the pace of a group discussion. A student who processes slowly and needs time to find the language for what they noticed can take that time without feeling the rhythm of the room.

The private format also allows the session to follow the student's specific reading experience rather than the group's composite experience. If the student marked three passages that week and two of them pulled in opposite directions, the session can spend forty minutes in that tension. If the student has already formed a clear position on the term's reader's question, the session can spend the time stress-testing that position—finding the counterargument, finding the moment in the text that most challenges it, finding out whether the position holds when it's genuinely pushed.

The Reader's Zine capstone is the same as in the group track: a required essay plus optional sections including curated notebook passages and a creative response.

Private Reader's Study is for students who read seriously, think independently, and are willing to follow a good book wherever it leads.
